We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Puchalski, Lmft and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I decided to become a therapist, I envisioned myself doing couples therapy, training other therapists, and (eventually) running a therapy practice. I didn’t necessarily have a specific timeline for when I wanted those things to happen, but I knew it would happen when the time was right. After licensure, I spent several years working at other clinics in both Minnesota and Arizona, strictly focused on honing my craft and becoming the best couples therapist I could be. After getting certified as an EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) couples therapist and working with hundreds of couples for many years, I naturally felt it was the right time to make the leap and start my practice. My wife had also recently completed her licensure in naturopathic medicine and we had a shared vision of being able to offer functional medicine for mental health services, and to be able to support people holistically – in mind, body, spirit, and relationships. We started looking at spaces for a clinic, and it wasn’t long before our dreams became a reality. The launch happened a bit sooner than we maybe anticipated, and we weren’t 100% ready, but we also figured no one is ever 100% ready to take a big risk like that.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Please tell us more about your business.
My business is centered around providing couples therapy and holistic mental health services. My wife and I launched our practice with a shared vision of integrating functional medicine into our therapy approach, allowing us to support our clients holistically—mind, body, spirit, and relationships. What sets us apart is our commitment to being client-centered, responsive, and engaged in providing the highest quality care. We also prioritize continuous education, ensuring that our team remains at the forefront of our respective fields, from couples therapy to integrative mental health care and trauma.
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.
One of the aspects I’m most proud of is the referral network we’ve built through strong relationships with clients and other health professionals. Most of our clients come through direct referrals, which reflects the trust we’ve established in our community. I’m also excited about our commitment to lifelong learning; our practitioners continually pursue hundreds of hours of continuing education every year, which allows us to offer innovative and effective treatment options. This dedication not only enhances our services but also keeps us motivated and passionate about our work.
How did you get to where you are today business-wise?
The journey to starting my practice was a gradual process that began when I decided to become a therapist. I initially focused on honing my skills by working at various clinics in Minnesota and Arizona after obtaining my licensure. After years of experience and specializing in Emotionally Focused Therapy, I felt ready to take the leap into private practice. The process accelerated when my wife completed her licensure in naturopathic medicine; we shared a vision that propelled us to find a space for our clinic. Although the launch came sooner than anticipated, we embraced the uncertainty, recognizing that no one is ever 100% ready to take such a significant risk.
Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Starting my practice was not without its challenges. In the early years, the workload is intense, and finding a work-life balance is quite difficult at times. I’ve always been a calculated risk-taker, and I’ve learned to embrace both successes and failures. Surrounding myself with mentors and supportive friends who understand the entrepreneurial journey is invaluable. Additionally, maintaining a focus on personal health and self-care helps me navigate the stress of running a business.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability. Being open to feedback and willing to pivot when things aren’t going well has been crucial for our growth. I’ve also realized the power of connection—both with clients and within the broader professional community. Building relationships has not only strengthened our referral network but has also enriched my personal and professional life.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I want the world to know that our practice is built on the core values of courage, connection, growth, equality, accountability, and wholeheartedness. We deeply believe in the transformative power of relationships and strive to create an environment where clients feel safe, heard, and supported. My personal journey from a small town in Minnesota to a therapist and business owner has shaped my understanding of the challenges many face in their relationships. I am passionate about helping people navigate those challenges and find healing through positive relational experiences. Ultimately, I hope to inspire others to embrace vulnerability, take risks, and recognize the importance of connection in their lives.
