We had the good fortune of connecting with Oliver Gosling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Oliver, why did you pursue a creative career?
I had been gravitating towards this since childhood. It wasn’t a decision I made, but a decision that was made in me. A need to touch base with, visualise, manifest and explore an emotional truth, as a way of connecting and being.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Success has come in the form of sustaining a practice and focus over many years, over and above outer successes of exhibiting and having my work marketed. The latter has been fitful and intermittent, but I have realised that my need to work supersedes that, like needing to find the space to breath. However, I also know that ultimately I hope the work will touch others , share a common empathy and feeling.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would want to go to a concert or opera, share beautiful music. I love to share good food – Italian, Chinese. Assuming the friend shared my interests, I would take them to the best museums of art and would open my studio to them. Finally, I would take them to where I love to walk, by the river, near my studio.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The most significant influences on my painting have been the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich and Chinese landscape painting.
