We had the good fortune of connecting with Prejon Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Prejon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that risks can be calculated however the first step is being willing to take risks. For many years I have be afraid to get up and move to California to pursue my music career alone. It wasn’t until I met my girlfriend who is a model that I found the courage to pack up and head to Los Angeles. The scariest part was not knowing if we could maintain a good life financially in a big city where everything is expensive. Since moving here we have been extremely grateful for the opportunities we have been provided and are working together to make sure all bills are covered and we have money left over to still enjoy life. Although we still have a long way to go without taking the risks of getting up and moving out to LA we would have been even further from our dreams. The only limits in life are the ones we set for ourselves! Risks help break those limits when you have a plan and stick to it!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always loved music and can remember performing for my music class at the boys and girls club everyday after school in second grade. The class instructor was also an independent artist who help us kids develop our stage presence and passion for music. In high school I started recording myself at home in my room and can remember people laughing at me when sharing my talents for the first time. My production was horrible LOL but the story was there. Once I was able to finally find an engineer who understood my vision I begin to create better music and made it on FM radio with multiples tracks. I was still far from where I am now however I was happy with my progression. The studio we would go to wasn’t the best but the engineer was passionate and knew how to use what he had. At times it was tough because it was in a trailer home without heat and some nights would get super cold. We would have to turn on the oven and keep the oven door open to stay warm while we recorded. None of that mattered once we heard what we had created. It was so worth it every time leaving the studio playing the latest track in my car for the first time. As time went on the studio was shut down and I was forced to look for a new engineer which was extremely difficult. Jumping from one engineer to another It was hard trying to find someone who wanted to really care for the music and not just the money. I stepped back for a few years to focus on some things going on in life and when returning from donating my kidney to my aunt my view on life had changed. I realized life is short and I must use my gift to inspire while I am here. Since then I have been putting my all into mastering my craft and have had multiple videos on YouTube hit 100K+ view as well as singles that have exceeded 100K+ streams. I relocated to Los Angeles from Phoenix and currently working on an EP that will display my passion and committment to my musical journey. One of the singles from the album is called “TAKE OFF” and it has really allowed me to make a lot of connections and expand my audience. Music is my therapy and my story is so relatable to many. I made a promise that I would NEVER stop making music. Our gifts have healing in them and it’s important we share that healing with the world!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely have to take them to the Hollywood sign. You can walk right up to it and I feel like this is a spot everyone has seen on TV. I would also take them to the beach. The beach is one of the most peaceful places on Earth! For food I would have to say this amazing Burger spot called Burgerama! One of the best burgers I have ever had!!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my girlfriend Chanel who has motivated me to chase after my dreams. She is extremely supportive of my music! It is very hard to be in a relationship with an artist however she has done an amazing job adapting to my lifestyle. Seeing her get success from modeling is such a motivation for me to continue to pursue my dreams as well. We definitely compliment each other and our relationship is based around love and support. She is one of a kind and that is why I am happy to give her a shoutout!
