We had the good fortune of connecting with Ray Thiry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ray, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve been a musician for many years. I started Ray Thiry Music, LLC because I was performing and teaching a lot around the valley and I wanted a way to keep accounting separate and I’m able to deduct business expenses through the LLC.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My most recent project is my guitar education website, AZGuitarSchool.com. The pandemic shut down the entertainment industry worldwide and I saw my gigs dry up immediately. That said, music stores report guitar sales are through the roof and I decided to accommodate guitar students trying to learn from home. The site is a constant work in progress but I’m proud of being able to help music students grow in a virtual environment. What sets the site apart from the seemingly never-ending list of guitar education sites is that it truly does cater to the beginner. Many teachers don’t have to patience or desire to work with young kids who are starting from the beginning, but my experience teaching elementary school has allowed me fill a void.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a tough question because of the pandemic. I’d definitely try to hit up some outdoor spots like Camelback Mountain, Tempe Town Lake, day trip to Flagstaff or Sedona, and maybe rent a boat at Canyon Lake. In my former life of being able to go out, I would recommend Four Peaks, Angel’s Trumpet, and AZ Wilderness brewpubs; Valley Bar, The Lost Leaf, and The Womack for live music; Herberger Theatre for live theatre.; Stand Up Live for comedy; Harumi for sushi; and First Fridays on Roosevelt.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t do what I do without the unwavering support from my wife, Erin. She loves music and she is always available to steer the ship at home while I’m working evenings and weekends.
