We had the good fortune of connecting with Rich Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rich, what do you attribute your success to?
Undoubtedly, the most important factor behind both mine and Magic Touch Mechanical’s success over the last two decades is the people on our team. Not only our front-line technicians and installers that meet with our clients every day, but also our management team, customer service reps, and all the other people that work behind the scenes making sure our product (the service we provide) is the best value in our market.
What should our readers know about your business?
There have been many proud moments for me and the Magic Touch team over the last couple of decades. From multiple BBB Torch Awards for Business Ethics to the prestigious ACCA National Contractor of the Year Award, I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished. What motivates me today is not the same as what has kept me going throughout the years. When I was younger, the excitement of building a large, well-recognized and well-respected company drove me to work harder. I wanted to build a company that was known for being the best around when it came to high-tech HVAC systems and home energy audits & improvements. Thanks to a great team of extremely talented and loyal people, we built that company! Today what makes me happy and keeps me going is being in a position to give young people the same opportunity my mentors gave me years ago. Seeing young men and women fresh out of trade school or sometimes even fresh out of high school growing and advancing in an exciting and lucrative career is very rewarding. It sometimes feels like yesterday when I was just starting out and needed someone to train and encourage me to be the best me. Now I get to be the “trainer” and “encourager” and that will keep me going for another few decades!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When most people think of Arizona, they think of the wild-west, Grand Canyon, and Sedona. While there’s no question Arizona is unparalleled when it comes to outdoor beauty, there’s also a lot of less-known awesome things to see, do and taste here. As a lifelong fan and participant in extreme sports there are a couple of must-do’s on most peoples bucket lists that you can do right here in the Phoenix area. I’d have to start with a trip to Chandler BMX to watch (or even race for those that dared) some BMX racing in action. Growing up in NYC, I lived on my BMX as a kid and dreamed of racing at Chandler BMX, one of the oldest and most recognized tracks in the sport. From there, maybe a trip down to Skydive Arizona in Eloy for some time in the wind tunnel or better yet, a jump or two out of one of their Twin Otter’s or the awesome Skyvan cargo plane (you can literally run and jump out of the back of the plane). All the action would probably have my guests a little hungry and this is where things get tough. There are so many great restaurants in Phoenix it’s hard to choose where to go, but some authentic street tacos would have to be on the list! I’d probably hit up Backyard Taco in Mesa and encourage my guest to eat at least five of the carnitas tacos (so good)! We can’t completely snub mother nature on this trip so I’d pepper in some hiking in the Superstition Mountains, Four Peaks, Camelback Mountain and South Mountain. Some bar-hopping in Scottsdale is most likely in order after a long day of hiking and a comedy show at the world famous Tempe Improv to wind things up.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people that deserve a shoutout for helping me and my company be where we are today. However, if I could choose only one person or group of people who deserve a shout out, it would have to be the people who gave me my first shot. As a teenager growing up in NYC, I was spending more time “on the streets” than I was cultivating my future. When that time on the streets started getting me into trouble, my parents reached out to some friends at church. These friends owned a large HVAC, Plumbing & Electrical Contracting company and offered to put me to work to keep me busy. Not only did they do just that, they got other people involved in making sure I stayed on the straight and narrow. A small group of senior technicians took me under their wing so to speak and didn’t give up on me. In the process of teaching me a trade, they also taught me how to help others, give back to the community, and pay it forward to others who needed support. My shout out goes to Jeff, Steven & Billy.
