We had the good fortune of connecting with Rubaiyet Abedin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rubaiyet, how do you define success?
Success is being in the happy zone. I don’t define success as having a bank balance or having a house, or a car. In fact, after having all the luxury items, people may not be happy. To me success is happiness. How happy you are in your day-to-day life with whatever you have and being able to say ‘thank you for everything’- can define your true happiness. At the end of every day, if you feel good about yourself and your life then that is a huge success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
First of all, my day job is working as a researcher. I love to do my engineering research work. But I feel more alive when I am hiking, exploring some places, and capturing beauty through art and photography. It’ is not always easy to do a day job and at the same time be present on social media. But it’s all about balance. Some people say traveling is expensive. But we traveled 49 states while we were in Grad school and doing our Ph.D. So, it’s possible if you have the will and urge to explore. Throughout my whole journey, I learned to be humble and not to take everything seriously. When we are serious about everything, we tend to worry more and we spend less time in the happy zone. But while we are in nature, we focus more on nature and worry less about life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Louisiana is the southern state USA, mostly famous for its food and music. If my friends are coming for a week, my itinerary should look like this:

Day 1: New Orleans
(city exploration, Bourbon street, French Quarter)
Day 2: New Orleans
(house of blues, Live music, Jackson square, Voodoo tours in New Orleans)
Day 3: Fontainebleau State Park,
Sunset at Mandeville
Day 4: Swamp tour in Louisiana
Day 5: Deep-sea fishing in Grand Isle
Day 6: City & LSU campus exploration- Baton Rouge
Louisiana State Capitol Building (Tallest Capitol in the United States)
Day 7: Caddo Lake state park (kayaking and sight seeing)

Places to eat in New Orleans: Café Du Monde, Brennan’s Restaurant, Antoine’s Restaurant, Napoleon House
Places to eat in Baton Rouge: The little village, Sammy’s grill, Louisiana Lagniappe Restaurant

The most fun part of Louisiana is exploring New Orleans- the city that never sleeps. New Orleans is a party city and got all the vibes. You will be able to enjoy Jazz and Blues here, and the Cajun foods are absolutely delicious. I am pretty sure you will love it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my all-time partner, my husband Moinul Mahdi. When I started my journey, it was not quite easy for me. In every step, he helped me out and encouraged me in every way possible. I am really thankful for having him in my life.
