We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Wilke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I have a morning routine that sets me up with a plan for the day. As an entrepreneur, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. I like to journal, list my ideas & plan my agenda each morning with my coffee. Each day I list 3 things that I need to get done and then schedule them between meetings. Accomplishing these 3 things daily creates small steps that lead to big changes.
What should our readers know about your business?
I own The Shine Advocacy Group & our mission is to empower parents, students & educators with a better understanding of special education. We help families get services & support set up at school for their children with learning differences/disabilities, either behind the scenes (training & consulting) or by attending the IEP/504 meetings with the parent/s. I was in disability services management in a large university & was inspired to start The Shine Advocacy Group when our son needed an IEP. I found the process more difficult than it needed to be & I had worked in the field for over a decade! Parents are not always aware of their disability rights at school & Education Advocates work in the IEP/504 process daily so we help guide parents on their Special Education journey. Education advocacy has a big learning curve. Our team has decades of collective experience in the field, and we are still learning every day. We know the possible outcomes of the meeting before we go in, so can help you prepare or field the questions in the meeting. We hope for the best but have planned for the worst, so we can help families get services as quickly as possible. Parents are their child’s best advocate, and working with an Education Advocate on your team will support you in that role.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start by grabbing a coffee from Press & head to Butcher Jones (backside of Saguaro Lake) to hike, and then sit on the beach & have a picnic lunch (from Trader Joe’s). We would then go to the Omni Montelucia for a spa day & end the night at Postino’s Wine Bar with bruschetta & wine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I got a Morning Sidekick Journal from Habit Nest & used it until the habit came naturally, I Love Habit Nest’s journals. I also love coffee & tea from Press Coffee when I’m working on my morning routine & goals.
