We had the good fortune of connecting with Takayuki Aoyama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Takayuki, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Wake up early, enjoy the sunrise, and drink a glass of water. I meditate, then go to my desk and write down in a notebook the future I envision for myself and what I need to do to achieve it. By continuing to do this, I am able to move forward without hesitation toward achieving my goals, and I am always able to reflect, correct, and improve. It all starts with my morning routine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went through a few interesting encounters and activities before I became a professional Blue Painter. First, I met two contemporary artists who were more than twice my age, and I was able to learn the ins and outs of being an artist by supporting them for several years. A few months after I finished supporting them, I found and photographed a dragon cloud floating in the sky, which gave me a strong inspiration to start my own artistic career. My works are mostly abstract paintings, but the color of all my works is blue. The theme of my work is natural energy such as ocean, wind, fire and magma. The reason for the blue color is that the super hot energy is pale blue, not red. I draw the energy inside me as natural energy.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The city I live in is Tokyo, Japan. Recently, the Tokyo Olympics were held. If I were to invite my friends to this city and show them around for a week, there are a few spots I would like to take them to. First, there is Ginza. Ginza is home to famous fashion brands and art from all over the world, as well as delicious restaurants, so I would like to take them on a fashion and art tour, and have them taste the delicious food. Next, I will take you to Toyosu. Toyosu is home to the fish market that used to be in Tsukiji, and I want them to enjoy fresh and delicious seafood bowls and sushi there. It also has the best view, and I would like them to visit at sunset to see Tokyo Bay bathed in the setting sun and the beautiful Rainbow Bridge. If you want the latest electronics or the deepest equipment, I can take you to Akihabara. If they want the latest electronics and deep equipment, I’ll take them to Akihabara, where they can enjoy the culture of anime and games. Then there is the hotel tour. Tokyo is home to many world-famous hotels, such as the Ritz-Carlton, Aman, Hyatt, and Four Seasons, as well as Japanese inns such as the Imperial Hotel and Hoshi-no-ya, so I think it would be fun for you to stay in a different hotel every day for a week. As for inspiring people, it is interesting to listen to craftsmen, regardless of their occupation, who have mastered their field. You can find them in various parts of Tokyo, but most of the traditional craftsmen are in Sumida Ward.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My heroes are my parents and some Japanese celebrities, but if I had to pick one world-famous person, it would be Brad Pitt, a Hollywood actor, movie producer, and furniture designer. Not only is his career itself amazing, but I always find it wonderful what he says and does in interviews and his attitude when volunteering in disaster areas. I have had the pleasure of meeting him in person four times when he has visited Japan. He was truly kind and his rich humanity exuded from his facial expressions and eyes. I think he deserves our respect from the inside out. He has been my role model since I was a high school student.
