We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Amanda Hartono and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victoria Amanda, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Not procrastinating. If I procrastinate a to-do-list, it will affect the next to-do-list and so on, and I have this habit of setting goals or targets for myself. I work in the tourism and beauty industry, they are fast-paced industries, and of course I have to make decisions and adapt to new circumstances quickly, that is why procrastination is not my friend. I am a curious person and always want to learn new things. I challenge myself all the time to grab new opportunities and go to new destinations. That means I never stop studying, not only in school and college life, but I study new things all the time in work life as well. In my 20s, I have been to more than 30 countries and did more than one occupation.
And last but not least, never forget to take a rest, I always make time to reward myself for meeting a target I set, it does not have to be a big reward, a time to watch a movie and eat something good are already a self-rewarding moment for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a travel consultant, a general manager in a hair & beauty salon, and because of the pandemic, I am also exploring new skill as a travel & beauty content creator by posting on social media and Youtube. To be where I am now, I must be brave to accept new challenges and adapt all the time. I cannot be at this point without the continuous support from those around me, because the industries I’m working at, which are tourism and beauty, only gets tougher and tougher. Tourism with its very dynamic changes in new normal era, beauty with its ocean-wide competitors and constantly ever-growing innovation. What I most proud from my life experiences is that I get the chance to share it with others, through lecturing, being speaker at several events, and doing interview for articles, just like now.
I learned many lessons along the way, like teamwork, interpersonal skills, fast decision making, patience, perseverance, and being positive all the time. The most recent project I’m developing with my brother is now “BillySan Hair & Beauty Studio”, it is a hair and beauty salon located in West Jakarta, Indonesia. This salon started from zero, we concepted and managed the system together, along with sleepless nights on several days before opening day on December 20th, 2021. What sets this hair and beauty salon apart from others is that we use natural products and green concepts for the theme, so the customers will feel more homely while pampering at the salon.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love this question! I’m originally from Surabaya, but now I’m living in Jakarta, Indonesia. So I will take my best friend to North and South Jakarta, to visit some of the best hangout spots, cafes and have some good Indonesian and Asian eats, like rice with beef rendang (this food is very famous and had been nominated as the most delicious food in the world), oxtail soup, fresh seafood, and sweet desserts. Not forgetting to take them to “BillySan Hair & Beauty Studio” to have some pampering time after a tiring flight or journey.. Hehehe..
Then move to Semarang city, 6 hours drive from Jakarta, with one of the best gastronomes, having Indonesian spring roll called “lumpia”, asem-asem, and mochi cake for dessert. Enjoying the sunset and evening at the old town. Also visiting Marabunta Building, a historic building which came back to life with good foods and live music. And if up to some challenges, I’ll bring my best friend to Lawang Sewu, a former office building, a head office of the Dutch East Indies Railway Co. which is believed to be super haunted.
Another 6 hours drive to Surabaya, my hometown, a green city, with a homely vibe. Having some culinary adventure from spicy to sweet foods, like rujak cingur (“cingur” is soft part of beef’s mouth, boiled and mixed with Indonesian salad), fried rice, meatball soup called “bakso”, pecel and gado-gado (another kind of Indonesian salads). Visiting aesthetic cafes around the city to have the best chill time.
And if we have some more time, continue the journey to Paradise Island, Bali. This island of Gods is very famous for its all-year-long summer. Australians and Americans like to visit this island a lot, even sometimes, they know Bali, but they don’t know about Indonesia, they thought Bali is a country. Having suckling pig, marinated ribs, enjoying sunset while eating fresh seafood is a must while in Bali. Have some green scenery by going to Ubud and Canggu. Chilling at a beach club and staying at tranquil Nusa Dua.
Indonesia has so many to offer! A week won’t be enough..
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all God, all that I have done is by God’s grace. Then of course my family, my dad, mom, and brothers who always love, support me and give constructive advice in all the things that I do or want to do. My teachers and lecturers during school, college-for-bachelor-and-master years, are unsung heroes. My working colleagues who always support each other and have great teamwork. My supportive friends (cannot say their name one by one, too many nice people in my life, so grateful!) who always maintain a healthy friendship, and lift each other up and up.
I recently moved from my hometown which I had been living in for 27 years to the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta, I made some new friends and colleagues here. Shoutout to them as well for welcoming me, so that I feel less homesick. And the new family or inner circle I met here, they made my wandering journey wanderful (pun intended).
