We asked some brilliant folks from the community to talk to us about how they think about risk and the role risk has played in their lives and careers.

I take risks in making music by experimenting with new styles and lyrics. Trying out different sounds and controversial topics captures attention and resonates with my fans. In my songs, I generally go for relatable subject matter, but I also tie in references and use wordplay to give the songs more personality. Risk is a lifestyle. All my life since I have memory I felt my mother and family members from her side encourage me to get this “go for it” risky personality. Since I was 3 years old, the predominant in every adult at home was this brave attitude for everything. My mother have 8 relatives between brothers and sisters and each of them took the risk to physically immigrate out of their own place to a different part of the country and another ones way more risky they jumped in a journey outside of the country as well. The path of the Artist is all a risk. Will people appreciate my work? Will I make work that’s “good enough”? Will people buy my work so that I can have validation? We came from backgrounds where certainly the elders might have had creative leanings, but our parents were not professional artists. For us to branch away from what was familiar when we grew up to new ways of living, and earning a living, was quite a leap of faith. Will people buy my work so I can pay my bills? Read more>>

When I first started my latest business, fear of failure was a huge obstacle for me to overcome. Normally, I like to play it safe, I would stay in my lane and do my thing because it was easier than the fear of failure that taking on risk meant. But anyone who has opened their own business knows, risk is part of the process of building any business. The first few months (okay a year probably!) of building my business, this fear of risk and failure drove me to work harder, get outside my comfort zone and talk to people at networking meetings, and present in front of groups about my business.
