The Early Days: why did you start a business

At first, I wanted the freedom, both time & financial. I didn’t want someone else raising my kids and I wanted to be able to travel and give them life experiences. By starting my own businesses and being my own boss, I could make my own schedule and travel whenever I wanted. At least this is what I thought would happen. Coming out of Naturopathic Medical school I knew that I envisioned healing differently than those around me. As Naturopathic Medical students, we already had a completely different view of medicine and what it takes to heal and how we can help people but outside of schooling, I spent almost every weekend learning even more modalities and ways of healing that truly shaped my vision. I have worked in the mental health field since 2009 and throughout my time in this field, I have been able to serve from all levels of care. From least restrictive outpatient care to inpatient residential treatment facilities. I found great value in all levels of care, but I found the most impact I feel I am able to offer is in outpatient care. The kind of therapeutic interventions one offers needs to be adjusted based on the needs of the clients, and when a client is in their most vulnerable or mentally fragile, they require less tools and more structure. I originally wanted to start off designing clothes and shoes. But life redirected me in the best way possible. I honestly just love fashion as a whole, I consider it an art. My business began as a hobby, which quickly grew to become the small business I am now. It was a combination of artistic fulfillment and the satisfaction of knowing that something I was doing was not only able to sustain me financially, but also giving others the chance to experience escapism from their lives and simply enjoy local entertainment with no pretext.

I like to say Oakley’s Oath was founded by chance not by choice. It was never on my life path to start my own business or nonprofit, although, I always wanted to find my purpose in life when it came to my career, nothing ever really called to me. Being a devoted Mother and pet owner was always my main focus and it took tragically losing Oakley, our beloved pet to find my purpose. I had been helping self employed people and sales people learn how to use social media for their business and I kept getting the question, “If I don’t really want to take the time to do this for my business who can I hire to do it for me”?
