We had the good fortune of connecting with Suzanne Simonetti and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Suzanne, how does your business help the community?
When I am working on a new book, the room I am sitting in falls away. I step into the setting and take on a new existence as my characters are brought to life on the page. I am grateful to be able to provide that same sense of escape to my readers. My stories are character-driven. By taking a hard examination of the different people who enter our worlds, readers are flooded with possibilities waiting in every interaction we have throughout our lifetimes. Everyone has dreams. When you turn the last page of my books, readers are left with inspiration to carve out the best versions of themselves imaginable.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My fiction is set on Cape May Island, NJ. In 1976, the city was designated as a historically preserved district. It is a charmingly quaint town filled with musicians, painters, singers, photographers, sculptures, potters, and artisans of all kinds. When we first bought our home on Cape May Harbor, I became immersed in the magic of this small town with its endless supply of inspiration and interesting characters.

I was that young child who always stared out the window with the teacher positioned at the chalkboard. Through this miraculous journey of crafting fiction, I am able to channel my colorful and vast imagination onto the page to create stories that fill the empty places inside us. I cover real life topics in my stories with real life people readers will want as friends.

Starting any new venture is challenging and let’s face it: scary. But, it doesn’t need to be. Through the powers of the internet, I now have a large network of fellow writers to call on for assistance and guidance. Getting the words onto the page was mighty challenging, at first, but then, it still is! The challenge never goes away no matter how seasoned the author. Getting started is the hard part no matter what you are hoping to accomplish, and the best time to start is always right now.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Before you cross the Cape May Canal at the end of the highway, visitors are greeted with the signature green and gold sign of The Lobster House–a Cape May gem and a must-see for all. Lunch or dinner on The Schooner or The Raw Bar at The Lobster House really sets the tone for the visit.

A stroll down The Washington Street Mall is essential with its many boutiques and fabulous dining options. I highly recommend Tisha’s for lunch or dinner and Delaney’s Irish Pub for a quick bite. The Mad Batter on Jackson Street serves a phenomenal Waldorf chicken salad sandwich on croissant, and they often have live music in the evenings with local musicians. There are fun and interesting tours like the trolley ride or horse and carriage which provide a historical overview of the town, sights, and key players from long ago. Grab a show at The Cape May Stage for on-stage performances all summer. Congress Hall is a great place to walk around, grab a bite at The Blue Pig, browse the shops, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail in The Brown Room or in an Adirondack chair on the great lawn just across from the beach.

I have taken some of the best photographs from The Thunder Cat Dolphin Watch in Wildwood Crest where the dolphins jump out of the water, putting on a show for the boaters. All year-long, there are activities to enjoy from the West Cape May Christmas Parade to farmers’ markets to local wineries and distilleries with live music throughout the warmer months.

Some of my favorite, splurge-worthy 5-Star dining options include: Peter Shields Inn, Washington Inn, Vintage, 410 Bank Street, The Ebbitt Room at the Virginia Hotel, and Primal.

Be sure to check out the USCG Base at the end of Pennsylvania Avenue and The Nature Canter of Cape May set right on the harbor on Delaware Avenue which sells goods from local artists such as jewelry, paintings, honey from the local farm, and books!

The Cape May Ferry Station is a neat spot to have lunch or dinner at The Look Out with live performances.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This Shoutout is dedicated to my dear friend and mentor, Patti Davis. Patti is an exceptional author with years of experience and has penned several books, both fiction and non-fiction. Her prose is lyrical and inspires me to bring my A-game to every new project I take on. Patti offered great insight when I was crafting my debut novel, The Sound of Wings, which is now USA Today bestseller. She also came up with the title, which works brilliantly with the storyline. Wings can represent those of a monarch butterfly to the earth angels we meet along the way who help and assist us on our journeys; Much in the same way Patti has done for me.
