Artistic and creative careers are among the most rewarding, but they also come with unique challenges. We asked some of the city’s best creatives to tell us why they choose to pursue a creative career.

Cherry Red | Vocalist/Singer of The Frequency Principle Duo

Actually, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from ASU. So, I have always wanted to pursue some kind of art. Many people are unaware of my art background but, I stumbled into becoming a singer. I frequented a lot of local music and karaoke venues. I met an older couple at one of the venues (which the name escapes me) but, they have become my “musical parents of sorts”. I had expressed an interest in wanting to get up on stage to sing with a band and to my surprise they were able to accommodate me. It turned out they ran many Blues Jams in Phoenix. Eventually, they have become my mentors and teachers of the blues music scene. Right out of high school my parents said I needed to go to college. At the time all I was really doing was skateboarding and filming footage for our out skate videos. Since I didn’t really have a clear path my family was like, “Go to school for business, can’t go wrong there.” I enrolled in ASU for business and lasted all of a semester before hating it. I was at a party one night a few weeks after I dropped out after my first semester of college and someone said they were going to film school. At the time I had know idea that film school existed. They said they loved going to school and they made really interesting and fun projects which sounded rad. The next day I looked into it and enrolled. Carolina Takahashi | Makeup Artist

I have always been surrounded by art and music. In high school, I was the go-to prom and homecoming makeup girl for my circle of friends. Despite my love for makeup, I actually decided to pursue a career in the music industry, as an audio engineer. I quickly gathered that the studio life was not for me and decided to switch gears. Once again, makeup called to me and I was in the perfect location to attend makeup school, Makeup Designory in Burbank, CA. At 19 years old, I began my career as a freelance makeup artist.
