We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr Princess Fumi Stephanie Hancock, DNP. PMHNP-BC. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr Hancock, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
As a start-up or business owner, you must learn to be resilient and cultivate an habit of ‘Yes, I Can inspite of…”.
As an African immigrant, I was told I could never succeed in the literary world or even open my own clinics. I was told I was too old to dream again. As someone from a silent culture where mental illness was a taboo, I couldn’t share my story, of depression, anxiety, adhd, suicidal ideation and attempt, for fear of shaming my family who are from African Royalty. Then, they tell me I was now in my 50s, it was time to pass on my dream to my children to fulfill.
Two things were my heart beat – to continue writing inspiring bestselling books that impact the world especially women and the second was to be the best board certified psychiatric mental health dr. of nurse practice! The road to these two were escrucistongly hard but I made it.
Today, I have written 24 books, 18 bestselliers, I have turned others into bestselling authors, became the first African -American to grace TEDxTalk in Al Anjal, Saudi Arabia. I have been privileged to have won over 4 Hollywood awards with my literary work and have directed some award documentaries bringing awareness to mental illness. In addition, Arizona welcomed me and here I made yet again my home. Hence, owning mental health clinics across Arizona where I help people with mood disorders.
Resiliency and Determination were habit’s I practiced daily. They fuel me when I am frustrated.
What should our readers know about your business?
At over 55 years old, I relocated from Tennessee to Arizona; as a second degree nurse with a dr of nurse practice in Psycbiatry, I needed to be in a place that would allow me to practice as well as link my practice to silent cultures like where I was born.
Prior to this, I went back to nursing school as a second degree holder. It was rough but the lesson I learned is that we must learn to tske help as it comes. I didn’t allow anyone to deter me from my dreams. I also got out of my own way by seeking helping in my areas of weakness.

As a practitioner, my unique way of helping my patients is by using their narratives to overcome their trauma.
I see patients across lifespan with expertise in mood disorders, ptsd, adhd, and offer TMS for those with chronic depression.
I practice from the point of view of someone who has been there before. I understand the pain. I hear my patietns and see them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a fairly new resident of Arizona, I am daily learning some interesting places; Dessert Botanical Gardens
Grand Canyon was incredible.
Talking Stick resort was where I visited this Christmas. In 20 years, my husband and I habe been busy building one business or the other, but December 2021, burnt out from the pandemic and fully vaccinated, we headed to the resort. Lastly, there are aquariums that one can visit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to start by thanking my husband, Dr. David Hancock, without whom I could never have succeeded. I am so grateful for my boys, Bola and Mola Thompson who keep nudging me to be the very best version of myself. I am so thankful to my stepdaughters too.
Today, I am so thankful for my group, the Fearless Visionaries, who tore their veils and allow me to help bring their inspiring stories of trauma to the world. My parents, sisters and brother have truly been an incredible part of my journey. When I lost my home, my first marriage, my businesses and was on the verge of committing suicide, they found me and told me it was okay to come back home like the prodigal daughter.
