We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I had been laid off of my admin position with Worker’s Compensation Board (which, let’s be honest, I wasn’t the best at), and I had a trip to Italy booked from way back. Instead of cancelling the trip and looking for work, I went with my husband, all the while thinking… where should I go from here? Italy assaults your senses in regards to art and history, so after spending time immersed in art, going to historical sites, and spending time talking with and buying from street artists, I decided to start my own art career. It just blew my mind to think about doing something you love instead of something you have to do to pay bills.
My daughter was out of the house, so if I failed, I didn’t have a dependent mouth to feed. It was a perfect time to do something for me!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an abstract artist specializing in oil and cold wax paintings. Mixing cold wax with oil makes the oil matte, so it has a beautiful finish!
My abstract paintings are inspired by old historical buildings that have chipping plaster, peeling paint, rust stains, splashes, marks and dents. All the things that give buildings a personality! I live in Canada, and the buildings are so new here, I really fell in love with the old buildings in Italy and Europe. It is there in those historical marks and details that I find endless inspiration. It’s like having that history in your home when you put up the painting.
I feel like the texture and the concept of these abstract paintings are unique and I get a great response when I attend art shows.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love going out into nature, so I would take them for a walk in the trails around my neighbourhood, and underneath the trestle bridge (a historical bridge in the area). I take extra time as I am also fascinated by rocks and stones, so I usually collect a couple when I head out on a walk.
I would take them to the capital city, which is a 45 minute drive, and we would go to the Portuguese restaurant for beautiful appetizers, a raw bar, and for some bacalhau, their famous cod dish that is to die for.
If it was hockey season, a hockey game would be in order.
I would also go to Arno’s Fine French Bakery for the most amazing chocolate almond croissants.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The city of Florence, Italy and all the street artists in the piazzas of Florence.
