We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikela Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikela, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The beauty industry is more valuable than it receives credit for. In the past people have assumed that doing hair is a profession to do in a “pinch” or that we are “just” hairstylists. Really we are here for so much more. We are the ones caring for the elderly as they age; feet, scalp and skin. We are the ones listening to life problems the way that a therapist would. We are the ones helping many women and men feel confident and ready for their next big life move or assisting them through a mid- life crisis. We are the ones listening when you don’t want or can’t communicate with anyone else. We are the ones working to stay up with sanitation compliances and educating ourselves on the best course of action for your hair, skin, and nails. This isn’t just “beauty.” This is confidence, a feeling, a culture.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Cosmetologist licensed to perform services for hair, skin and nails. I’m a stylist and salon owner. What sets me apart from others is my meticulous ability to provide beautiful color and hair extensions. As of now I am proud to have opened up my own salon successfully. This wasn’t in my plan and I’ve done it! I’m so happy with this decision and can’t wait for what the future holds. I’ve been working as an independent contractor for the majority of my career and last spring decided that I couldn’t build my own brand and business if I was building someone elses. I wouldn’t say it was easy and I wouldn’t say it was hard- it was time. I organized myself, made a list of decisions I was going to have to make and went from there. I stayed open minded and prayed a lot! The biggest lesson so far is really focusing in on what my priorities are and staying the path with them. I’m not listening to advice from anyone I wouldn’t seek it from and I’m staying open to those that can offer a great deal of wisdom no matter the industry- I find a little something from anyone who is successful and maybe some that havent been. I want the world to know that this is an essential and professional industry. That there are professionals that are creating beautiful spaces and environments that lift people up and support a healthy mind.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Prescott Arizona. A small town in Northern Arizona that holds a lot of history. Arizona is a beautiful state with a lot to see! We would do food, sight seeing and shopping close to us as Prescott is pretty neat to spend time in. We may take some time to head for Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, or the Grand Canyon. Arizona also has beautiful botanical gardens, ranches, and preseveratories for the Saguaro Cactus. There’s honestly so much here!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is for so many. My family for the constant support. I’ve had so much love and encouragement along my journey. A very special shout out to the family who has been supporting me since day one- The Thomas Family. The Leighs for encouraging me to go to the next level early on- it was early but it was a good move! Many stylists for letting me watch them while I was in beauty school. Stylists I’ve worked with that have shown me that this industry doesn’t have to be catty. Big Money Stylist for an organization that truly believes that we are more than just “hairstylists.” I’m forever grateful for a group that reminds the professional that we are worth more than we give ourselves credit for. We are strong business professionals and are changing the industry.
