We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy Luzzi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My son! I have been a hairdresser for over 12 years and when I had my son in 2019, I wanted a career that I could be super flexible with. I made the decision to leave my 9-5 job after my maternity leave to do hair full time. In the past I mostly did it part time with a full time position elsewhere. I did that because I was afraid of risk. Well fast forward to the birth of my son, I took a leap of faith to build a clientele just under 2 years and I’m BEYOND happy I did so! In the middle of it, my husband encouraged me to get my realtor’s license, which is also another flexible career, in a great time for real estate!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I currently own two businesses now, I am the owner of The Beauty Effect, which is my hair business and a part time realtor! I’m sure there are hairdressers and salons on every corner now a days and realtors but what sets me apart is that I give a damn about my clients! I care about the integrity of their hair, how it looks and I care about their reaction! I care so much that I’m also very honest. I know many hairdressers that will take anything to make a dollar but for me it’s about quality over quantity. If I don’t feel comfortable doing your hair because it’s damaged or etc, I will kindly decline or explain to them why. That’s my work they will be showing off and if it looks bad, I will only get bad reviews. Same with real estate, if I can’t sell or help you buy because of something I will let you know why. The clients deserve the truth! I’m not here to just make money off of you and hope I never see you again. I hope to build A brand that people can admire to come back or refer me too! I honestly think both of my careers go hand in hand. Referrals are the bread and butter to it and at the end of the day, it’s a service job. I am helping you get the house you want just as much as getting the hair of your dreams! Plus most of my clients use me as their realtor because I do their hair! It’s a win for everyone!!
By no means was this easy, as the saying goes if it was everyone would be doing it right? I know not many women can juggle two careers, have a family and a social life. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices whether it was not spending time with my husband or playing with my youngest son, missing sports games of my step son, skipping out on girls nights, you name it. We always see what happens at the end and how successful someone is but most of the time we never know how they got there. I had to constantly remind myself it will get better. The hard times will pass because I am doing EVERYTHING I can to make it better. Whether it’s working overtime, spending money for my business, losing sleep, asking for help etc, i know in my heart it will only get better, it has to.
That’s what I want the world to know about my brand. I didn’t get funded or paid anyone to sit in my chair or right reviews about me, i busted my tail off to get here and I’m not done yet! I want the world to know this business is real. I want my clients to trust me, have confidence in my work and confidence I will take care of them. I want everyone to leave my chair feeling beautiful and confident in themselves! It is such a POWERFUL feeling to have as a woman! Im here to show them you can absolutely do it, men or women, if you don’t have the confidence to start your business know that you’re NOT alone and one day you will find it within to just do it! That’s literally how it starts!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would have to start by a night out on the town. I love eating in Scottsdale for the ambiance and the delicious drinks. Even downtown Phoenix is a great start! Sushi is always my favorite, Ra sushi is great or Sushi Brokers in Scottsdale! There are so many new and trendy places popping up everywhere so we can’t go wrong there! I’d have to take her to Sedona as well because it’s absolutely beautiful. I’ve always wanted to experience antelope canyons so is definitely take her there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Vincent, definitely deserves a shoutout! He supported me emotionally and financially as I was trying to build my clientele. He always believed in me, always building my confidence but I would be lying if I said it was an easy road. It was brutal because we weren’t making the type of income we desired. Especially myself because I have little patience. But he knew and was always there to slow me down. I knew at the end of the tunnel would be bright! So he definitely deserves a lot of that credit for putting up with me!
Also, my parents definitely deserve a shout out especially my dad. He has been a realtor for over 20 years! He mentored me my first year because as a new agent it is tough! I didn’t know much about the industry and now I’m happy to say I’ve met my goal for the first year because of him! I know I can always call him when I have questions or concerns.
My current and previous salon ownerrs deserves some credit too! Let me start with the previous owner, Jim and Julian. When They hired me back in 2016, I was terrified of color! I only liked hair cutting and styling but we knew at the end of the day, hair coloring is where the money is at. So I had to learn quickly. Anytime I had a question or a panic attack, I would go over to either of their stations and constantly harass them! I felt so bad to interrupt them and their clients but I had no confidence in what I was consulting. Fast forward 2 years later, they ended up selling the salon to Linda and she is just as kind and amazing! ,She wants her stylist to SUCCEED! Most owners just care about making money for themselves but she knows that if we didn’t succeed, neither did she! And I loved that mentality, she made me confident enough to charge what I charge and respect myself as a hairdresser! My business wouldn’t have started without her, Jim and Julian’s help! Julian is also a realtor and helps me all the time with deals! To be perfectly honest I still consult with Jim time to time! It never hurts to have a second opinion. He even consults with me too! It’s great when the mentee can help the mentor!
And of course I can’t discredit my family and clients/friends! Without their support there would be none of these businesses! Some are still my clients and some have seen me in the past for hair or real estate! Some are even now friends! I am beyond grateful for all of them!
